Mahinga Kai Composting
Kitchen green waste rotting in landfills produces some of the highest rates of greenhouse gasses out of any rubbish. However, when the same waste is properly composted carbon is put back into the soil, and these harmful gasses are no longer released into the atmosphere. What they then produce is nutrient rich compost, perfect for growing healthy vegetables.

Supporting men through meaningful employment
Many men in our community have faced tough times and are looking for a fresh start — a chance to rebuild confidence, purpose and stability. At Mahinga Kai Composting, we create pathways into meaningful employment, with access to stable accommodation, mentoring and a supportive men’s group for those who need it.
While not every team member requires this level of support, our focus is on providing opportunities that empower people to move forward in life with pride and purpose.
How it all works
Our model is simple, local and circular.
Each week, we collect up to 4.5 tonnes of food waste. Instead of going to landfill, it is processed through our composting system, “Rosie”.
Rosie is the only closed, accelerated composting system of its type in New Zealand. It rapidly transforms organic waste, “cooking” it to around 80°C to destroy harmful pathogens and significantly reduce composting time. The process creates no odour, leachate or methane emissions.
The material is then aerated, monitored and left to mature naturally. Over four to six weeks, it becomes high-quality, nutrient-rich compost full of biological life.
The compost is then:
supplied to local gardeners, growers and nurseries
used in our own urban farm
returned to the community as a natural alternative to synthetic fertilisers
The result is a closed-loop system where waste becomes a resource, and work becomes a pathway forward.
